Remember Them - June 2006
Private Ronald Joseph Warren MM was born in Rivers, Manitoba. He served with the 2nd Battalion The Monmouthshire Regiment of the British Army during the campaign through North West Europe in 1944 and 1945. He landed in France a few days after the famous D-Day landings. On 22nd October 1944, Private Warren was awarded the Military Medal for his actions when his company was attacking the village of Kruistraat, near Nijmegan, Holland. Four months later, on the 25th February 1945 he was ‘killed while attempting to stalk the enemy with a Bren LMG (Light Machine Gun)’. He was aged 21 years. He was the son of Joseph and Lottie Warren of Rivers, and the portrait photograph displayed was part of a large display of service men and women from the district who served and those who were casualties during the Second World War. These photographs have been kept with The Rivers Branch of the Canadian Legion since the war. Probably because he was a resident of the UK during the war, until now Pte Warren’s name did not appear on any of the Canadian Department of
Veteran’s Affairs (DVA) lists, nor was his name entered in the Book of Remembrance in the Peace Tower of the Canadian Parliament Building in Ottawa. Pte Warren is buried in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery in Germany. Bill Czuboka
