The History of the Royal Regiment of Wales:
69th (South Lincolnshire) Regiment of Foot (1782-1881)

India and the East Indies (1805-1825)

The 69th disembarked at Madras in July 1805. In July 1806, the Regiment survived an attack by mutinous sepoys at Vellore, losing two officers and 80 other ranks. After service in the Travancore campaign in 1809, in 1810 the Regiment was present at the capture of Bourbon (Reunion Island) and Mauritius and in 1811 was included in Auchmuty's expeditionary force that captured Java. The next 14 years were spent expanding and consolidating British influence in India, and serving in the Mahratta War 1817-1820. In February 1826, the 69th disembarked at Gravesend and was awarded the battle honour 'India' on 30th May in recognition of its distinguished service in that sub-continent.
