The History of the Royal Regiment of Wales:
The South Wales Borderers (1881-1969)

The Second World War

During the Second World War the 2nd/24th had the distinction of being the only Welsh Battalion to land on the Normandy Beaches on D-Day and, together with the 2nd and 3rd Monmouths, fought throughout the North-West Europe Campaign until VE Day, whilst the 6th Battalion was one of the outstanding battalions in Burma.

A Victoria Cross was awarded to Corporal Edward Chapman, 3rd Monmouths in the Teutoburger Wald, Germany in April 1945. After the war, Cpl Chapman continued to serve as a Senior NCO with the 2nd Monmouths.
