| In 1849 the 1st Battalion fought in the
2nd Sikh War as part of General Sir Hugh Gough's Army of the
Punjab at Chillianwallah . On this occasion its conduct inspired
General Campbell to write: "It is impossible for any troops
to have surpassed the gallantry displayed in this attack.
This single regiment actually broke the enemy's line and took
the large number of guns to their front".
