We will remember them... Belgium pays tribute to Welsh Soldiers

Every evening since 1928, at precisely eight o'clock, the Last Post - the traditional salute to the fallen warrior - has been played under the Menin Gate in Leper (Ypres) Belgium.

On 31 October this year, the 25,000th Last Post was sounded.

To celebrate this unique occasion, the Last Post Association, in collaboration with the 'In Flanders Fields' Museum, has organised a year-long commemorative event. Every evening between 31 October 2001 and 31 October 2002 the Last Post will be played in the honour of the memory of a British (and Empire) serviceman who perished in the grim fields around Ieper, fighting for the causes of peace and freedom.

Linked to this daily act of remembrance, a double exhibition in the 'In Flanders Fields' Museum in the Cloth Hall and in Ieper Town Hall is providing further information about the servicemen concerned. Throughout the year in the foyer of the Town Hall a series of panels (which will change on a weekly basis) will be displayed, which will give details of the lives and the deaths of the individual soldiers. The soldiers concerned are named under the Menin Gate prior to the Last Post played each evening in their honour.

The 365 names chosen for this commemorative event represent a broad cross section of the Army of Great Britain and her Empire between 1914-1918. Following soldiers of former Regiments of The Royal Regiment of Wales will be commemorated during the year on the anniversary of their death:
