Christmas and New Year opening times announced For details of our Christmas and New Year opening times, please click here... October 2002 Royal Day out for surviving WW1 Veteran Reuben Heywood who fought in the WW1 trenches with 10th Battalion South
Wales Borderers was specially invited to a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham
Palace in July. There he was introduced to HRH Princess Anne - The Princess
Royal. Reuben, wearing his regimental tie and accompanied by his daughter,
travelled from Manchester to London by train for the great day. He is
thought to be thelast surviving member of the 60,000 Borderers who served
in the Great War. Invalided out of the army in 1918, Reuben recently suffered
a bout of ill health – but the medical consultant said it wasn’t
age related! This month Reuben celebrated his 103rd birthday. Happy Birthday,
Reuben. September 2002 Y Ddraig Goch gets a new coat of paint! The memorial to the 38th (Welsh) Division’s action at Mametz Wood during the 1916 Somme offensive was erected in 1987. This was achieved by monies raised by public subscription mainly in Wales and the energetic efforts of the South Wales Branch of the Western Front Association. Y Ddraig Goch (the Red Dragon) – the national symbol of Wales - was sculptured by David Peterson and is considered to be one of the finest and most poignant memorials on the Western Front. The dragon has been recently been damaged by shotgun pellets, and is in need of repainting and refurbishment. The many hundreds of people from Wales that visit the monument each year may well notice its poor condition. Western Front Association (South Wales Branch) is aware of the situation, and later this month the dragon will be removed from its plinth to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission workshops in Arras for repair. The cost of renovation will be £2,000 and will be met by members of the branch. Once the refurbishment is completed, Y Ddraig Goch will be returned to its rightful position protecting the wood where many Welshmen gave their lives. Click here to see an image.. August 2002 The Big Draw: Create a Zulu Army! As part of The Big Draw, a UK nationwide, month-long celebration of drawing, we’re hoping to recreate the 4,500-strong Zulu army that attacked soldiers of the 24th Regiment at Rorke’s Drift on 22 January 1879. Many schools will be contributing their drawings of Zulu soldiers. The more visitors to the museum and to this website who join in, the more likely we are to recreate all 4,500 Zulus, with their spectacular headdresses and uniforms. Click here for more details... We would welcome any comments about the site to swb@rrw.org.uk The new website has been designed by Peter Critchley of Beaver Design, Hertford, Hertfordshire. Peter is an Anglo-Zulu War enthusiast and, with his father, has been responsible for the already-successful web site www.rorkesdriftvc.com, which provides a focus for military buffs from around the world. 25 July 2001 - The 'New' Rifle
Lord Clifford was a member of the 24th regiment when he won the Victoria Cross for his gallant conduct during the Ashanti War of 1873-74. He gained further fame when serving with the 57th (later The Middlesex Regiment) as one of Lord Wolseley's staff officers during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, when he was involved in the extensive search for King Cetswayo after the Zulu army's defeat at Ulundi. The Zulu King was finally captured by Major Marter of 1st Dragoons. During the great gale of October 1987, a number of trees in the cemetery were blown down and the headstone on Lord Gifford's grave was severely cracked. The cost of repair was estimated to be between £3,000-£4,000, a sum which has been raised by the Burial Ground Association. The restoration fund included a generous donation from Lord Gifford's former regiment, now The Royal Regiment of Wales (24th/41st Foot). 05 June 2001 - Prince Charles visits his Regiment
