World War 1 - Reserve and Training Battalions South Wales Borderers

Summary of Service

3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion: 4th August 1914: Mobilized at Brecon. 23rd August 1914: Moved to Pembroke Dock. 19th November 1914: 4 Companies detached to Edinburgh (until 11th March 1915) as a mobile reserve. 9th June 1915: Moved to Hightown, Liverpool as part of the Mersey Garrison. August 1919: Personnel transferred into newly formed 1st Battalion at Chatham, Kent.
9th (Service) Battalion: 31st October 1914: Formed at Pembroke Dock. 1st January 1915: Assigned to 104th Brigade, 35th Division. 10th April 1915: Moved to Kinmel Park, Flintshire and re-designated a 'second reserve' battalion in 14th (Reserve) Brigade (later 13th Reserve Brigade). 1st September 1916: Re-designated 57th (Training Reserve) Battalion, 13th (Reserve) Brigade at Kinmel Park. August 1917: Re-designated 282nd Infantry Battalion. 27th October 1917: Re-designated 52nd (Graduated) Battalion, South Wales Borderers (see below).

13th (Reserve) Battalion: July 1915: Formed at St. Asaph, Flintshire as a 'local reserve' battalion from the depot companies of 10th and 11th Battalions. September 1915: Moved to Kinmel Park, Flintshire as part of the 14th (Reserve) Brigade (later 13th Reserve Brigade) and re-designated 59th (Training Reserve) Battalion.

14th (Reserve) Battalion: July 1915: Formed at Prees Heath, Shropshire as a local reserve battalion from the depot company of 12th Battalion. October 1915: Moved to Conway, Caernarnvonshire. January 1916: Moved to Kinmel Park, Flintshire as part of the 14th Training Reserve Brigade, strengthen by drafts from 21st RWF and 19th RWF. 1st September 1916: Re-designated 65th (Training Reserve) Battalion as part of 14th (Reserve) Brigade.

15th (Service) Battalion: June 1918: Formed at North Walsham, Norfolk. July 1918: Absorbed a cadre of 10th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. September 1918: Moved to Aldershot and disbanded.

51st (Graduated) Battalion: 27th October 1917: At Aldeburgh, Suffolk, 230th Graduated Battalion was re-designated 51st (Graduated) Battalion, South Wales Borderers as part of 204th Brigade, 68th Division. [230th Bn was formerly 58th (Training Reserve) Bn from 12th Bn Welch Regt.]. April 1918: Moved to Stowlangtoft, Suffolk. 10th March 1919: Moved to Germany as part of Western Division of the Army of Occupation on the Rhine.

52nd Graduated) Battalion: 27th October 1917: At Patrickbourne, Canterbury, Kent, 282nd Graduated Battalion was re-designated 52nd (Graduated) Battalion, South Wales Borderers as part of 201st Brigade, 67th Division. [282nd Bn was formerly 57th (Training Reserve) Bn from 9th Bn South Wales Borderers]. April 1918: Moved to Foxhall Heath, Ipswich, Suffolk as part of 67th Division. 22nd March 1919: Moved to Germany as part of Western Division of the Army of Occupation on the Rhine.
53rd (Young Soldier) Battalion: 27th October 1917: At Kinmel Park, Flintshire, 59th (Young Soldier) Battalion was re-designated 53rd (Young Soldier) Battalion, South Wales Borderers. 22nd March 1919: Moved to Germany as part of Western Division of the Army of Occupation on the Rhine.
