Education at the Royal Regiment of Wales Brecon Museum

FINDING OUT ABOUT THE VICTORIAN SOLDIER
KEY STAGE 2 WORKSHOP

Workshop length: 1½ to 2 hours (flexible)
Numbers: Up to 36 (1 adult per 12 pupils)
Prior Knowledge: A lesson or two introducing material in our leaflet "Finding out about the Victorian Soldier", available free from the Museum, will help pupils gain maximum benefit from the workshop.

This workshop gives a different angle on National Curriculum work on the Victorians. It is based on the Museum's world-renowned collection of artefacts relating to the Regiment's involvement in the Anglo-Zulu War. Opening in the Education Room with discussion led by the Education Advisor, pupils have the chance to handle items of equipment used by the British and by the Zulus. Using this evidence, the pupils are encouraged to work out for themselves what life was like for a Victorian soldier and his adversary. Depending on the age and requirements of the pupils, slides may also be used to illustrate discussion. Moving into the main galleries, pupils will continue to use evidence analysis skills to tackle worksheet tasks on the Victorian soldier and then a wider range of related topics.
